FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT COWANSVILLE INSTITUTION

Laval, Quebec, February 11, 2011 - On February 10, 2011, at approximately 7:40 p.m., an inmate was assaulted by a fellow inmate at Cowansville Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary. The injured inmate was escorted to the institutional Health Care Centre for treatment of minor injuries. 

The institution was placed on lockdown and will return to normal routine when management determines it is safe to do so.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and Sûreté du Québec will review the circumstances surrounding the incident. In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, CSC is working with police to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
