Laval, Quebec, February 24, 2011 –On February 23, 2011, at approximately 7:45 p.m., 4.5 grams of heroin, 41.2 grams of hashish and 61.5 grams of marijuana were seized on a visitor as a result of the vigilance of correctional staff at Leclerc Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary in Laval. The estimated institutional value of the contraband is $15,000. Police officers were called and arrested the visitor.
As part of its Transformation Agenda, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from being brought into institutions in order to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone and promote offender rehabilitation. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to bring contraband into the institutions.
Info-Crime (450-664-6702) is a free telephone number available for reporting any pressure exerted on a visitor by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault or loan sharking. This information is kept confidential and will be followed up by a security intelligence officer.
