ASSAULT AT DONNACONA INSTITUTION

Laval, Quebec, May 3, 2011 – This afternoon, at approximately 2:40 p.m., an inmate at Donnacona Institution, a maximum-security federal penitentiary, assaulted a correctional officer by striking him repeatedly. The incident took place in the cell block as the inmate was heading outside for a regular activity period.

The officer was examined by the Institutional Health Care Centre and later referred to the local CLSC for further assessment of non life-threatening injuries.

The aggressor was immediately restrained and placed in segregation pending his transfer to another maximum-security institution. 

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada is working with police to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and the public remains the highest priority for the Correctional Service of Canada.
