Laval, Quebec, May 9, 2011 – On May 7, 2011, Joël Malette, an inmate at Cowansville Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary, died of apparent natural causes. He was found unconscious in his cell at approximately 5:30 p.m. The institutional staff began resuscitation, which paramedics later took over.
Malette, 46, had been serving a sentence of 2 years for assault with a weapon, assault, threats, failure to comply and failure to appear. His next of kin have been notified of his death.
As in all cases involving an inmate death, the police and the coroner were called in to investigate. The Correctional Service of Canada will also review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
