COWANSVILLE, Quebec, September 8, 2011 - On September 1, 2011, as part of an investigation conducted by Preventive Security and through the vigilance of correctional staff, a search of an inmate’s cell at Cowansville Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary located in Cowansville, produced several contraband items.
Upon inspection, 560 tablets of methamphetamine, five 10 ml bottles of steroids, 96.8 grams of hashish, tobacco, a cell phone and a charger were found. The estimated institutional value of the drugs and items seized is $40,380.
As part of its Transformation Agenda, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to bring contraband into the institutions.
There is a toll free number (1-866-220-7782) available to citizens for reporting any pressure exerted on a visitor by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault or loan-sharking. This information is kept confidential and will be followed up by a security intelligence officer.
