FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT DONNACONA INSTITUTION

Donnacona (Quebec), October 21, 2011– On October 20, 2011, at approximately 11h50 a.m., an inmate from Donnacona Institution, a maximum security federal penitentiary located in Donnacona, was assaulted by two other inmates in a common area.

The victim was examined by the institution’s health care centre and was then transferred to a hospital in the area for further assessment. He is currently under observation and his injuries are not life threatening. Following the incident, the perpetrators were placed in segregation.

The Sûreté du Québec was informed of the incident and will be investigating. Correctional Service Canada (CSC) will also examine the circumstances surrounding the event.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and the public remains the highest priority for the Correctional Service of Canada.
