Cowansville, Quebec, December 9, 2011– During the late evening on December 6, 2011, as a result of the vigilance of correctional staff at Cowansville Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary located in Cowansville, objects with suspicious contents were recovered on the perimeter of the Institution.
Upon inspection, a total of 513.4 grams of tobacco was concealed in the objects. The estimated institutional value of the tobacco seized is $8,215.
CSC imposed a total smoking ban in all federal correctional facilities through a phased-approach on May 5, 2008.
CSC is strengthening measures to prevent unauthorized substance from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.
