Why was the policy changed?

The policy has been modified in relation to the Response to the Coroner’s Inquest Touching the Death of Ashley Smith (December 2014).

Editorial modifications have been made to the Chemical and Inflammatory Agents and Physical Handling section.

Other editorial modifications were made to provide added clarification.

What has changed?

Mental health and self-injurious behaviour have been added as factors to consider during situational assessment.

The parameters on response options for dealing with physically uncooperative behaviour have been redefined.

The Verbal Intervention section has been expanded to include the use of de-escalation techniques as part of conflict management.

Physical handling is now treated in a section separate from the one on chemical and inflammatory agents to provide more clarity.

How was it developed?

The Correctional Operations and Programs Sector held full consultations with internal and external stakeholders. The Board of Investigation, Security Operations and Strategic Policy developed the modifications.

Who will be affected by the policy?

Every staff member that is involved in the management of security incidents.
