Healing The Relationship Between Federally Sentenced Women And Communities

Section B - Current Crisis In Understanding Of Criminal Justice Issues

There has been an increase in fear of crime, prolific media coverage of violent offenses, increased costs of incarceration, and faltering confidence in our present justice system that has contributed to the current "crisis" in understanding in criminal justice issues. Hence, neither liberal nor conservative ideologies are content with the present system.

CSC has a critical role in encouraging communication among all persons affected by crime. Communication should follow the principles and objectives that have been established by pilot programs such as "Circle Sentencing". This will provide the public with greater access to information regarding the circumstances surrounding an offense, judicial processing of individual cases, attention to victim’s needs, and providing knowledge of the alienation the offender experiences through this judicial process.

This information will create a "critical mass" of citizens willing to transform conditions in their community and re-think their approach to justice.
