Proclamations

Diverse Needs; Unique Responses, Restorative Justice Week 2012

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has been an active partner in the restorative justice community for more than a decade and has been proud to provide leadership to Restorative Justice Week since 1996.  As such, every year CSC calls upon municipalities across Canada to proclaim the third week of November as Restorative Justice Week to acknowledge the impacts and achievements of the restorative justice approach and its application in the traditional criminal justice system.

The call for proclamations also suggests that municipalities:

  • Host a town hall meeting to promote an awareness of how restorative justice is expressed in their community;
  • Challenge community partners to create a local planning committee for Restorative Justice Week activities;
  • Invite a guest speaker from their community, who is involved in restorative justice, to share their perspectives.

In 2011, proclamation call letters were sent to 4364 Canadian municipalities along with a generic proclamation. CSC received responses from 332 municipalities and of those, 301 proclaimed the week while the remaining 32 have a policy that prohibits them from making any proclamations. Additionally, three provinces proclaimed the Week.
