The Correctional Service of Canada's (CSC) Restorative Justice Division is pleased to announce that it is accepting nominations for the 2013 National Ron Wiebe Restorative Justice Award. This award was established in honour of the late Ron Wiebe, former CSC Warden, for his outstanding commitment and leadership in the field of restorative justice.
The award is open to all Canadians and is presented annually to an individual or group who meet the following criteria:
- Models restorative justice principles in the service of justice and peace; and
- Demonstrates, through their work or lifestyle, ways of transforming human relations by enabling and promoting communication and healing between people in conflict, be they victims, offenders, colleagues, families or neighbours.
The 2013 recipient will be announced at the National Restorative Justice Symposium Banquet during Restorative Justice Week, November 17-24, 2013. CSC will fund the recipient's travel and accommodation for the Award Ceremony.
Required Documentation
Each nomination must include the following documentation:
- The Nomination Application Form Online Application | RTF.
- A Biography to provide background information about the nominee. In point form; please include biographical information, as well as specific chronological information including dates regarding education, work and volunteer experience, skills, major achievements, recognitions, etc. (maximum of three (3) pages)
- A Nomination Overview that includes specific information about the individual or group being nominated, detailing how their work or efforts demonstrate restorative justice in action. The overview should clearly outline how the nominee meets each of the above-stated criteria. (maximum of three (3) pages)
Furthermore, through the use of specific examples, consideration should be given to how the individual or group has:- demonstrated their understanding and commitment to the values of restorative justice in all aspects of their life;
- advanced the principles of restorative justice;
- made a difference in the lives of other individuals and/or the community at large;
- promoted communication and healing in their program, service or community work; and/or
- utilized inclusive and collaborative processes in their work.
- Letters of Support that convey the nominee's achievements as they relate to the award criteria and considerations. Please note that Letters of Support from nominee(s) or their family members will not be accepted. (minimum of two (2) to a maximum of three (3) letters with each letter being no longer than three (3) pages)
- A Photo of the Nominee is required and will be used to present the nominees at the Award Ceremony. Please note that photos will not be shown to the selection committee during the selection process of the award recipient.
Terms and Conditions
- Documents must be submitted in Microsoft Word in the following format:
- Plain White Paper 8x11.5 (Do not use letterhead)
- Font: Times New Roman, size 12
- Margins: 2.54cm
- Line Spacing: Double
- Nominations will be considered complete once all required documentation is submitted (Biography, Nomination Overview, 2-3 Letters of Support, and Photo of the Nominee).
- All required documentation must be received before the nomination closing date; no later than July 19, 2013.
- It is the nominator's responsibility to ensure that the nomination is complete. Only complete nominations will be considered by the Selection Committee.
- Only 'REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION' as listed above will be accepted. Additional materials will not be considered by the Selection Committee.
- Only one nomination per candidate will be accepted. The first complete nomination received will be considered should more than one nomination be submitted for the same individual or group.
- Previously submitted nominations for nominees that did not receive the Award can be re-submitted for consideration. In such cases, it is required that the documentation submitted be updated.
- Self-nominations will not be accepted.
- Nominators will be informed of the Selection Committee's decision in October 2013.
