National Ron Wiebe Restorative Justice Award Ceremony
November 16, 2006
Honouring Canadian leaders in restorative justice

The 2006 Award Recipient

Mr. Mariano Aupilardjuk
Nunavut Artic College
Rankin Inlet, Nunavut

The Correctional Service of Canada is proud to announce that this year's recipient of the Ron Wiebe Restorative Justice Award is Mr. Mariano Aupilardjuk.

Mr. Aupilardjuk is considered one of Nunavut's foremost Elders. After learning and mastering traditional Inuit skills, ways and wisdom, he dedicated the majority of his adult life to teaching traditional restorative justice processes to youth and leaders across the territories. He has shared his knowledge with his community and many organizations, and has contributed to the shaping of Nunavut's justice system. He has also used his skills as a traditional counsellor by offering guidance to inmates at the Yellowknife Correctional Centre.

In 2001, Mr. Aupilardjuk was awarded the National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Heritage and Spirituality. He was chosen as this year's Ron Wiebe Restorative Justice Award recipient because of the decades he has spent committed to traditional Inuit practices of justice, and his tireless work as both respected counsellor and academic.

Created in 1999, the award honours the late Ron Wiebe - former Correctional Service of Canada Warden of Ferndale and Elbow Lake Institutions in British Columbia - for his inspiration and commitment to the field of restorative justice. The award recognizes Canadians who have demonstrated, through their work or lifestyle, ways of transforming human relationships by enabling and promoting communication and healing between people in conflict, including victims, offenders, colleagues, families, or neighbours.

Congratulations to Mr. Aupilardjuk on his successes!
