Approximately 8,700 Canadians, from all walks of life, volunteer at CSC - helping in our institutions as well as in the community. Volunteers contribute to a variety of institution-based programs. In the community, volunteers support families of incarcerated offenders and help released offenders re-adjust to life in the community.
CSC volunteers – We cannot succeed without you
Volunteers and Citizen Advisory Committees are vital to the proper functioning of the Correctional Service of Canada. As part of the National Volunteer Week, several regional activities are held across Canada to highlight the importance of volunteers. We also present the Taylor Award to one of our five nominees.
On behalf of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), I want to thank you for your selfless contributions to our organization and to Canadian communities.
This year is a very special year for all volunteers, including Citizen Advisory Committees, at CSC. In 2011, we will be marking three important milestones: the 10th anniversary of our National Volunteer Association, the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers and the 10th anniversary of the Taylor Award; which recognizes outstanding dedication to volunteerism in corrections.
The last decade has seen a marked increase in the number of volunteers within our organization. Today, approximately 8,700 Canadians volunteer their time, energy and passion to helping offenders become law-abiding citizens. Their work inside our institutions and in the community provides a bridge to help offenders safely transition from incarceration to rehabilitation.
The mission of the Correctional Service of Canada speaks to our contribution to public safety. This could not be realized without the tireless efforts of our many volunteers who build partnerships and form relationships with the communities we serve, thereby making our institutions and communities safer places for everyone.
Thank you again for your hard work and dedication, and for the outstanding contributions you make every day in the lives of so many Canadians.

Commissioner
