Vice Chair Ron Joiner, and I were invited to and attended the Executive Development Symposium in Cornwall on Nov. 23, 24 and 25. It was very interesting to be two CAC members in a group of about 200 top managers from CSC. We were made to feel very welcome and Commissioner Head spoke about CSC’s relationship with CACs both in his opening and closing remarks.
The theme for the three days was Transformation. Each Region met as a group and discussed what they had accomplished, what needs to be done and the challenges that come along with any type of change. It was apparent that there were different issues from Region to Region, yet as I observed the discussions it seemed that there were many common themes.
I was reminded that this is similar to what we at NEC find when we have our discussions. There are distinct differences but always the same theme carries through.
In addition to setting goals and planning specific steps in moving forward with the Transformation Agenda the groups met to develop strategies around Relationship Building and Public Service Renewal. As discussions progressed it was apparent that relationships with the communities where CSC sites are situated are of utmost importance. It was also apparent that many managers saw CACs as an important liaison between CSC and the community.
We were able to attend a most impressive Ceremony where several CSC employees were honoured and received Corrections Exemplary Service 1st Bars, Corrections Exemplary Service Medals, Long Service Awards and Transformation Awards.
In sum we came away with a greater appreciation of the challenges that CSC faces in advancing the change agenda and we believe that we have clearer understanding of our role in assisting CSC accomplish its goals.
