CSC and Afghanistan
CSC has contributed to Canada's Engagement in Afghanistan through two initiatives:
United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA)
Between 2003 and 2010, Canada seconded a senior CSC manager as a Corrections Advisor to UNAMA. The Corrections Advisor coordinated UNAMA correctional affairs and supported the Government of Afghanistan in its efforts to cultivate a national correctional system that respects international standards for the treatment of prisoners. The activities of the Corrections Advisor were centralized and national in scope and based out of Afghanistan's capital, Kabul.
Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team (KPRT)
From 2007 until 2011, a small team of CSC officers were deployed to the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Kandahar, Afghanistan. These correctional experts worked directly with front-line Afghan correctional staff and administrators to improve security and make advancements in the general living conditions and operations of prison facilities in Kandahar Province. The focal point of their work was the province's main correctional facility, Sarpoza, located in Kandahar City. Through mentoring, training, and advising local correctional staff at Sarpoza prison, CSC helped the Kandahari community maintain a more secure environment that promotes law and order. With the aid of international partners, Kandahar corrections officials have been empowered with the tools they need to manage their institutions, supervise offenders in line with international standards, and continue to build professional correctional services that support their community.
This project was funded through the Department of Foreign Affair's Global Peace and Security Fund.
