CSC Partnerships in Europe

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has participated in a number of programs for correctional reform or improvement in Europe, and continues to provide technical assistance, educational tours, and the exchanging of information and best practices with various European countries either directly or through international forums.

In 2002, CSC launched initiatives with Lithuania and the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary to upgrade their correctional facilities and practices to European standards in preparation for their entrance into the European Union (EU). The resounding success of these projects is visible in that all four countries have since become active members in the EU. CSC has also played a considerable role in developing a strategic plan and correctional policy in Kosovo from 1999 until 2003.

CSC has provided training and exchange of information and best practices with England and Wales and Sweden. Training programs with Sweden and exchange of visits with the United Kingdom are ongoing. CSC anticipates continued positive relations with European countries.
