The majority of CSC's work with China has been through the International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy (ICCLR), which has been working with the China Prison Society for over a decade. Since 2001, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has hosted a number of Chinese delegations as well as participated in visits to China to speak on corrections issues.
In October, 2004, three CSC officials participated as members of a Canadian delegation to visit China as part of the framework of an agreement between the ICCLR and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) involving a five-year program of work on implementing international standards in the Chinese criminal justice system. The focus of the visit was to impart information on community corrections and conditional release in Canada through presentations and discussions on the results of a current community corrections pilot project and prison reform in China. The visit also served to explore possibilities for future exchange activities between China and Canada in the area of corrections. Based on the success of this most recent visit, there is strong indication that our Chinese partners remain interested in continuing the program of information sharing between Canada and China.
