21. It is recommended that all correctional officers receive refresher training every three years in the following areas:

• CSC and the Law
• Use of Force Management Model
• Cell Extraction Procedures
• Restraint Equipment
• Arrest and Control
• Use of Force, and
• Chemical Agents

CSC'S RESPONSE:

Currently, all Correctional Officers receive annual refresher training in the form of re-qualification with respect to firearms and every three years on the use of chemical agents.

Other aspects of refresher training are presently being examined in conjunction with a study of Use of Force standards in both law enforcement and correctional settings. This study is being conducted by the Security Division and will ascertain the scope and required timeframes for re-certification and re-training. It is anticipated that this study will be completed by the end of fall 1999.
