CSC'S RESPONSE:
After in-class training is provided at the CSC Staff Colleges, new officers are placed in institutions for a twelve- month probationary period. During probationary period, new officers receive on the job training and coaching from more experienced correctional officers.
During this period, the new officers will be exposed to a variety of posts and job situations that they can /will expect to face when their probationary period is complete.
The officer's performance is monitored by supervisory staff and forms part of the officer's performance assessment completed prior to the end of the probationary period. This performance assessment includes recommendations for any additional training that the officer may require in order to fully fulfill the duties of a Correctional Officer position.
Once the probationary period is over, correctional officers are assessed on their performance on an annual basis and again, such assessments identify areas of performance where further training and/or development is required.
