COMMISSIONER'S EDITORIAL

The Correctional Family - The Fabric That Binds Us Together

Don HeadWe have always known that when we work together we produce some amazing results for Canadians. While we continually strive to find better ways to work together as a team, there are times when the bond goes beyond teamwork: it is more reminiscent of the bonds within a family. We only need to look at the occasions when an institution or a parole office has to deal with difficult situations. Very quickly we see a level of collegiality, support, dedication and commitment that resembles a highly functional family working to achieve a common goal in a caring, compassionate and professional manner.

Most recently the "correctional family" had to come together nationally to deal with the tragic loss of our colleague, Louise Pargeter, during the performance of her duties. This tragic incident caused each and every one of us to reflect on the important work we perform on behalf of Canadians and how we support each other.

During this last month, many of our colleagues offered support, assistance and comfort to those affected by the loss of Louise. The care and compassion demonstrated across the country reminded us all that we belong to a large family: the Correctional Service of Canada.

I want to thank each and every one of you for the support, assistance and leadership you have shown to Louise's family and our colleagues during this difficult time. The strength of the "CSC family" will allow us to continue to move forward and ensure that the safety of Canadians is paramount in all our actions.
