By Derek Robinson, Correctional Supervisor, Ontario Provincial Police Pen Squad
The Police/Corrections Investigative Unit, commonly known as the Pen Squad and Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) officials from two maximum-security institutions met in May to share important information on roles and responsibilities when a major crime occurs inside an institution.
Two sessions were held, at Kingston Penitentiary and Millhaven Institution, with presentations made by Detective Sergeant P. Clement and Sergeant Paul Rosato to front-line supervisors and managers. Subjects included crime scene management, exhibit control and handling, blood spatter evidence, note taking and statement preparation.
The exercise attracted very favourable feedback from both institutions upper management. Due to popular demand, the officers will try to organize similar presentations later this year at more institutions.
