CSC Honour Guard Attends Washington Memorial

By Jason Parliament, Correctional Officer, Fenbrook Institution

The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF) is an American National Corporation established to "take care of our own" by offering support to officers and their families who have been involved in assaults, accidents, illnesses, and other tragedies either on or off duty. The CPOF holds an annual four-day gathering for correctional officers and their families to present service awards, offer educational seminars dealing with factors affecting our profession, and to honour those who have fallen in the line of duty.

It was with great pride that nine members of the Beaver Creek/Fenbrook Honour Guard attended the Correctional Peace Officer Foundation's Project 2000 fifteenth Annual National Memorial Service at the US Marine Corps War Memorial in Washington DC, on June 18, 2004.

Following the memorial ceremony, we were invited to attend an award presentation luncheon where the CPOF was presented with donations from state corrections departments, wardens, and other organizations from across the United States. The CPOF, in turn, presented assault survivors with commendations, provided families with support, and officers with service awards.

Through newly developed relationships we were also invited to attend a specially guided tour through the United States Capitol Building by an officer of the Washington Capitol Police.

Many thanks to all those who made this opportunity possible through support, contributions, participation in fundraising efforts and organization: Wardens Peter White and Mike Provan from Beaver Creek and Fenbrook Institutions, Correctional Service of Canada Honour Guard Commander Scott Ritchie, and CPOF National Honour Guard Commander Steve Dizmon.end
