Policy number and title:

COMMISSIONER'S DIRECTIVE 821 - MANAGEMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Why was the policy changed?

A technical amendment was required to bring CD 821 into alignment with the updated Protocol 821-1 - Post-Exposure Protocol (PEP) for Managing Significant Exposure to Blood and/or Body Fluids.

What has changed?

A technical amendment was made to paragraphs 6 and 18 a. i. to replace "Standard precautions" by "Routine practices", in line with current public health terminology.

Paragraphs 16 and 17 have been changed to reflect current Health Services Governance titles - Director General, Public Health Branch, and Regional Director, Health Services.

The title of paragraph 28 has been changed to POST-EXPOSURE PROTOCOL (PEP) and the paragraph now clearly indicates that the Protocol is related to a significant exposure to blood and/or body fluids of another person as outlined in the amended Protocol 821-1 - Post-Exposure Protocol (PEP) for Managing Significant Exposure to Blood and/or Body Fluids.

How was it developed?

The amendment to CD 821 was developed in collaboration with the Human Resource Management Sector, Labour Relations Directorate, Workforce Wellbeing Division; Public Health Branch; Correctional Operations; Regional Directors, Health Services; Legal Services; Strategic Policy Division; Linguistic Services; Aboriginal Initiatives Directorate; Women Offender Sector.

Accountabilities?

The Director General, Public Health Branch, is now responsible for national public health and infectious diseases programs. The Director General, Health Services position no longer exists.

The Regional Director, Health Services, is now responsible for regional health services, including infectious diseases programs.

Who will be affected by the policy?

All staff and inmates/offenders involved in a significant exposure to human blood and/or body fluids.

Expected cost?

There are no anticipated additional costs associated with these amendments.

Other impacts?

None.
