COMMISSIONER'S DIRECTIVE 850 – MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Why was the policy changed?

This Commissioner’s Directive dated May 2002 has been updated and revised in order to comply with the recommendations contained in the Correctional Service of Canada’s Response to the Office of the Correctional Investigator's Deaths in Custody Study and to the recommendations of the Policy Review Task Force.

What has changed?

Several technical changes have been made. The Policy Objective, Authority and Responsibilities sections as well as the definitions have all been updated. An Application section has been added. The new policy is reflective of current mental health services provided to offenders. It also describes the role and composition of the Regional Mental Health Council and includes hyperlinks to national guidelines for mental health services.

How was it developed?

The policy was developed following a national consultation and in collaboration with the Strategic Policy Division, Mental Health Services, and the National Policy Review Team.

Assistant Commissioner, Health Services, Assistant Commissioner, Correctional Operations and Programs, Regional Deputy Commissioners, Regional Directors, Health Services, Regional Mental Health Council, Institutional Heads, Executive Directors, Treatment Centres, District Directors and mental health professionals.

Staff and contractors providing mental health services to offenders.
