The Federation of Sikh Societies of Canada celebrates
"Restorative Justice Week: Community, Victims, Prisoners"

This is an international commemoration designed to highlight the interaction between the community, victims and prisoners. There is a responsibility for all of us to be sensitive to the plight of the prisoners (when they try to integrate in the community), the anguish of the victims (who are trying to live with their loss) and the community (which must display a sense of tolerance and acceptance, awareness of the special need of the victims and the prisoners and their families and a display of fairness and morality). This "Restorative Justice Week" is a special effort to make ourselves aware of these realities.

We must reach out with Dignity and Healing for all. We must seek God's help in reaching that difficult but essential state. We must begin the process of healing ourselves individually and as a community - if possible by involving the victims, the families of the victims, the prisoners, the families of the prisoners and the special members of the community who are in a position to help the process. It is the beginning of the process of healing (forgiveness, acceptance and realization) into which we must initiate ourselves and the seek His Grace in achieving the healing.

Guru Granth Sahib text (pM:574)

We suggest that we meditate on some humbling shabds (hymns) and keep them in our hearts at all times.

A special effort has been made to prepare reflection material for the Sikh religion. We hope this offers a meaningful understanding of the concept of justice as given by the Sikh Gurus and as found in the Guru Granth Sahib.

The Federation is a member of the Interfaith Committee on Chaplaincy, Chaplaincy Division, Correctional Service of Canada.
