APPENDIX D - Multi-Level Institutions in Canada
Multi-level institutions facilitate different security levels within a single institution or compound, including maximum-security. Each setting provides the degree of supervision, control and programming that is required for the security level. Each unit is equipped with its own housing, programming, recreational/leisure and administrative support spaces. Only major, institutionally based support areas, such as the main administrative component, central stores, heating plants, major industrial shops, health care and gymnasiums are provided for all security levels. Some multi-level institutions are healing lodges, treatment or mental health centres, or psychiatric centres. These institutions address specific needs of offenders, such as psychosocial problems or mental illness.
