Why was the policy developed?
As a result of the coming into force of Bill C-14 on Medical Assistance in Dying, on June 17, 2016, these new Guidelines were developed to provide direction to health care professionals and other institutional staff in responding to requests from inmates seeking medical assistance in dying, and ensuring that legislative and professional practice responsibilities are respected.
How was it developed?
This policy was developed by the Health Services Sector in collaboration with Legal Services and the Policy Sector and in consultation with internal and external stakeholders.
Accountabilities are detailed in the Guidelines.
Who will be affected by the policy?
All institutional staff and institutional health care providers will be affected by the policy.
