Policy Bulletin

Policy Bulletin 300

What is new?

The purpose of the AED program is to provide reasonable access to an AED in the event of a cardiac emergency. The Guidelines provide instructions for the proper cleaning, maintenance and storage of the AED. They also outline the steps to follow after an event has occurred when an AED was involved, including the data download and the management of the Post-Rescue Medical Report.

How was it developed?

The Human Resource Management Sector, the Health Services Sector and the Corporate Services Sector developed the Guidelines in consultation with the National Health and Safety Policy Committee, Regional Occupational Health and Safety representatives, unions, Security Branch, Legal Services and Strategic Policy Division.

Accountabilities?

The Guidelines clearly outline all AED related accountabilities.

Who will be affected by the policy?

All persons granted access to CSC facilities.

Expected cost?

National Headquarters Technical Services are responsible for the initial acquisition of AED devices, training units, wall mounted cabinets, AED signs produced by Corcan and consumable supplies to provide initial training for all sites.

The Institutional Heads or designates will ensure procedures are in place with regard to maintenance and replenishing of all AED consumable supplies for the ongoing use of the AED equipment within their facility.

Other impacts?

Since April 1, 2008, the AED content and certification are included in all cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) level C programs. The training will take place over three years.
