Why was the policy changed?

Following a recommendation from a Board of Investigation, the Health Services Sector developed guidelines for the health care response to sexual assaults of inmates.

The guidelines are associated with the new Commissioner's Directive (CD) 574 - Sexual Coercion and Violence developed in response to various recommendations, including those made by the Office of the Correctional Investigator in their 2019-2020 Annual Report.

What has changed?

These are new guidelines which outline the roles and responsibilities of Health Services staff in responding to sexual assaults in institutions.

Roles and responsibilities of all staff are also included for responding to alleged sexual assaults when Health Services staff are not present on site.

The guidelines include procedures for responding, reporting, and preserving evidence related to sexual assault incidents.

How was it developed?

The Health Services Sector developed the guidelines in collaboration with the Correctional Operations and Programs Sector and the Policy Sector, and with input from internal and external stakeholders.

Who will be affected by the policy?

All staff and contractors, as applicable.
