Policy Number and Title

The Authorized Items List for Staff and Official Visitors is found in the following Commissioner's Directives:

  • CD 566-1 - Control of Entry to and Exit from Institutions (Annex B);
  • CD 566-2 - Control of Vehicle Entry to and Exit from Institutions (Annex B);
  • CD 566-8 - Searching of Staff and Visitors (Annex B).

The Authorized Items List for Staff and Official Visitors is part of the standardization of the search procedures at the principal entrance. This list ensures consistency and seeks to address staff and official visitors' needs for certain items during their shift or visit to an institution.

What has changed?

Following a decision made at the Commissioner's Management Team meeting held on August 2, 2012, the Authorized Items List for Staff and Official Visitors has been changed, effective August 8th, 2012.

Blackberry/cellular phones/pagers or tablet type devices must be registered with the Assistant Warden, Operations, and will be authorized by the Institutional Head for the following persons:

  • Commissioner;
  • Regional Deputy Commissioners;
  • Wardens;
  • Deputy Wardens;
  • Assistant Wardens;
  • Security Intelligence Officers;
  • Doctors;
  • Police; and
  • Emergency Services personnel.

In exceptional circumstances only, the Institutional Head may authorize personally-owned devices such as Blackberry/cellular phones/pagers or tablet type devices.

Accountabilities?

All staff and official visitors will be responsible for obtaining prior authorization from the Institutional Head for their items. Staff and official visitors are also responsible for ensuring appropriate signing in and out of equipment and for safeguarding the authorized items while in the institution.

All staff and official visitors.

The Commissioner's Directives will be reviewed and the required amendments will be completed by September 2012.
