Why was the policy changed?

Further to recent Board of Investigation recommendations, this policy is being amended to clarify information to be communicated when an inmate is placed on an enhanced observation level.

What has changed?

A technical amendment is being made to paragraph 2i of CD 843 to specify that the communication process regarding enhanced observation must include the sharing of relevant information with staff completing the observation. This would include information on behaviour changes staff should be cognizant of, triggers or cues that could be indicative of possible self-injurious or suicidal behaviour, and the provision of verbal briefings to staff monitoring inmates under CD 843 to facilitate effective monitoring.

How was it developed?

This technical amendment was developed by Health Services in consultation with the Security Branch and the Strategic Policy Division.

Who will be affected by the policy?

All staff and anyone else interacting with inmates could potentially be affected.
