Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS)
Although CSC is not legally bound by the Federal Sustainable Development Act (FSDA) and therefore is not required to develop departmental a Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS), CSC has implemented its own Sustainable Development Strategy for the 2015-2018 period. CSC's SDS 2015-2018 contains 40 specific commitments/targets.
The SDS commitments/targets initiated during the 2015-2016 fiscal year include the following:
- Complete the design phase to convert buildings 18 & 25 from electric heat to district hot water heating system (central heating plant) at Springhill Institution (Atlantic Region).
- Connect the Structured Living Environment (SLE) to the Building Management System at Nova Institution (Atlantic Region).
- Initiate a project to upgrade the centralized heating system at Cowansville Institution (Quebec Region).
- Reduce electrical consumption by gradually replacing the perimeter lighting at Drummond Institution (Quebec Region).
- Install new building automation systems at Regional Headquarters and Joyceville Institution (Ontario Region).
- Upgrade an energy inefficient air conditioning system at Edmonton Institution (Prairie Region).
- Install a heat recovery system on an existing unit at the Regional Psychiatric Center (Prairie Region).
- Integrate electrical and gas meters into DDC controls and set up digital energy recording at Mountain Institution (Pacific Region).
- Install occupancy sensors in all boardrooms and staff washrooms at Kwikwèxwelhp Healing Village (Pacific Region).
- Reforest the access road at Donnacona Institution (Quebec Region).
- Replace water-cooled air conditioning systems at Port-Cartier Institution (Quebec Region).
- Replace water-cooled air conditioning systems at SADP complex (Quebec Region).
- Install automatic shower shut-off in three living units at Beaver Creek Institution (Ontario Region).
- Install low-flush toilets and urinals in the administration building at Joyceville Institution (Ontario Region).
Progress has been made on all commitments/targets listed above and CSC will continue to implement these environmental initiatives in 2016-2017 in order to reduce its gaseous emissions that contribute to climate change.
In addition, the SDS commitments/targets planned to be initiated in 2016-2017 fiscal year include:
- Replace all masts and fence lights with LED lights at Atlantic Institution (Atlantic Region).
- Establish a regional automation program to optimize energy consuming systems for all institutions in Quebec Region (Quebec Region).
- Reduce electrical consumption by gradually replacing the perimeter lighting at Drummond Institution (Quebec Region).
- Implement a solar energy project at Collins Bay Institution (Ontario Region).
- Replace all street lighting with LEDs at Bath Institution (Ontario Region).
- Replace all street lighting with LEDs at Okimaw Ochi Healing Lodge (Prairie Region).
- Replace all street lighting with LEDs at Stony Mountain Institution (Prairie Region).
- Replace all outdoor lighting on housing units with LEDs at Edmonton Institution for Women (Prairie Region).
- Implement a solar array system at Saskatchewan Penitentiary (Prairie Region).
- Convert existing lighting systems to LEDs at William Head Institution (Pacific Region).
- Replace all road and parking lot lighting to LEDs at Pacific Institution (Pacific Region).
- Improve waste sorting capabilities at Dorchester Institution (Atlantic Region).
- Conduct a kitchen water use study following the cook chill implementation at Mission Institution (Pacific Region).
Throughout the SDS three-year cycle, each site will contribute to CSC's environmental sustainability agenda, particularly with energy saving initiatives, in an effort to reduce the ecological impacts of its operations.
